Audio Transcription Has Evolved a Great Deal

Audio transcription in simple terms is the transformation of verbal and audio material into written texts. Court reporters, secretaries, web design specialists, and many more other professionals are involved in creating audio transcripts in their work. Musical transcription and recording of oral histories are also avenues where audio transcription is effectively employed.

In the early days before the advent of technological advances, audio materials could be transcribed only through a collaborative process between the speaker and those individuals who needed to record the words. Frequent repetitions and errors crept into the finished material quite often.

It was Thomas Alva Edison who created the first modern recording equipment. The phonograph made crude recording on a tin foil disk and allowed playback of the recording. This was too fragile and later it was improvised and made more practical, by Alexander Graham Bell. He used wax cylinders in order to create the gramophone. Later systems used magnetic tape to record audio material.

By 1990, modern digital equipment made it possible for audio data to be recorded anywhere and later to be transcribed. The most important use for audio transcription nowadays is to produce written records of important events and to provide machine recordable information for dissemination over the internet or through e mail. Audio materials remain inaccessible without use of technological devices. Hence by trying to make these materials available in a printed or text format, the material can be circulated among a lot more people. Also, the content that is available in audio materials is not machine recordable.

Search engines are unable to access the contents of audio files on a website. Hence, indexing of these audio materials without the use of a detailed metalog entry or a complete transcription of contents is impossible. When written transcriptions are provided alongside audio files, this helps to improve and bring more traffic to the site.

Subtly stated, audio transcription is a historical method used for preserving very important audio materials. Audio transcription is also a convenient and efficacious means to produce accurate records of various business proceedings. It is also one of the best ways to boost traffic to corporate and personal websites. And this provides greater visibility for business enterprises over the net. Business meetings and scientific proceedings too require audio transcription facilities in order to be recorded properly and later on published in text format for public dissemination. Audio transcription is getting popular nowadays and transcribing of the minutes of meetings and scientific discussions help to later retrieve valuable information as and when required.
